CHI-SHOU

廊桥镇桥神兽

As one of the “Nine-Sons” from the Dragon in Chinese tale, the Chi-Shou is a dragon without horns and is commonly described as having a huge mouth and belly full of water. During the Han Dynasty, people start to believe that the Chi- Shou was a sacred animal that protects the bridges.

2017 Milestone

THE BRIDGE is located at Anshun Bridge, one of Chengdu’s most important historic landmarks. Depicted in the Travels of Marco Polo, the origins of the bridge can be traced back to the 13th century. Over the course of hundreds of years, the bridge became dilapidated and was destroyed by flooding in the early 20th century. In the early 2000s, the municipal government of Chengdu initiated restoration work on Anshun Bridge, taking care to honour the architectural language and rhythm of the original design, while transforming it into a modern cultural and recreational hub.

In 2017, Award-Winning International Design Agency Neri & Hu Design and research office took on the task of transforming the interior environment of THE BRIDGE. The design concept envisions a “hanging lantern” to recall the clarity and unity of the historic building in all its grandeur. The resulting design inserts within the river landscape a luminous and translucent glass lantern, creating an envelope to mask a series of conceptualized objects to enrich and intensify the sensual experience for every guest.
